Mission

History

Built in 1963, Tabor Retreat Center was originally used as a convent for the Daughters of Charity who staffed Holy Cross Regional Catholic School. Tabor remains dedicated to the memory of these women, whose spirit permeates this sacred space. Tabor was dedicated as a retreat house by Bishop Walter F. Sullivan on May 8, 1988.

The retreat center is named for Mt. Tabor, where Deborah settled disputes and sang her Biblical song, "Awake, Awake!" (Judges 5:12).

Mission

Mt. Tabor is also traditionally understood as the site of Christ's transfiguration(Matthew 17:1-8). In that spirit, this center is intended for the awakening and transfiguring of those who come here to commune with God.

A Catholic presence in central Virginia, this house of prayer has been placed under the patronage of St. Vincent de Paul (1581-1660), servant of the poor. As he taught that "it is our duty to prefer the service of the poor to everything else."
